Finally! My New Years resolution of starting a weblog suffered a glitch as my pc died a hideous death. Now, reincarnated, here is the electronic version of my life in Naples.
To start with, I should say that Im here because I love the place. Naples is the most Italian of italian cities, where family, food, faith and football are all the 'f's' you need. I have been coming here reguarly for four years now, and decided last September to leave London and try my luck at teaching English here.
A local funeral yesterday. All the shops rolled down their shutters as the cortege walked by. I dont know whether its out of respect, a fear of lost trade or perhaps a superstitious avoiding of bad luck. Whichever way, ithe scene could have been most other countries 50 years ago. That is what hits me most about southern Italy. The sense of community and tradition is fifty years behind the rest of Europe. I suspect it has more than a little to do with the lack of huge supermarket chains and I'm grateful.
