Even the English newspapers picked up on the latest camorra outrage last week. A fourteen year old girl was shot by a camorra boss, who was the subject of a drive by shooting. He has now been charged with her manslaughter, and is in the prison. Its murkier than that though, as this particular camorra boss was a pentito - a supergrass - who turned himself in two or three years ago. It doesnt change the fact that an innocent 14 year old girl was shot in the head and died outside her house in Forcella. The city was in shock, and then up in arms. They think 15,000 went to the funeral on monday, a funeral where the word Camorra was said only once.
Forcella is the most inner city inner city area here, and has been in thrall to organised crime since the Camorra was itself founded. Its not a place to walk about at night unless you want to use up all your holday and medical insurance...
Now, at the end of the week, Eros Ramazzotti has said he will do a benefit concert for Annalisa, the victim, to build a chapel for her in Forcella, so her dad can go and pray there. More alarmingly, the girls diary was found, after a dream revealed to a neighbour where it was kept... Bear in mind that Naples is the most supersititius city. The excerpts from the diary were printed in yesterdays paper accompanied by the lottery numbers for death, diary, and so on..

On a lighter note, the evenings are longer and the people have taken to the streets to walk in the evening sunshine. Here in Naples, the obligatory person covered in gold spray paint has taken hold. The first I ever saw was in Florence 6 or 7 years ago. Not content with giving a mime, the latest recruits just stand very still while covered head to toe in gold. Its the fault of the girl who started 'being' the mummy of Tutankhamun. Here in Naples we have a couple in gold who stand side by side on a box holding flowers. There is also a man in white who is a sort of bacchus figure and mimes pouring wine into a goblet. The most bizarre of all, however, is a man in a gold anorak and boots, gold head and face who remains very still..... as a coal miner. I know he is a coal miner because he has a gold pick and a hard hat. What is curious is that Naples (in fact Italy) is not renowned for its carbon deposits, and the statue is all the more galling because he sits on his box, with his eyes closed and does nothing. You cant even give him money for standing still. I dont think he is the most successful street entertainer in naples, certainly not in the same league as Punchinello, who walks around in a white clowns outfit, black mask and a mandolin. He is also the most miserable looking man in Naples, which doesnt make you want to press coins into his hand and ask to have your photo taken with him.

London is coming to Naples too, Sightseeing tours in brand new red double deckers buses start this month, but its a swingeing price, and I dont think there will be that many takers.
